Philosophy

The Community Policing Unit (CPU) adopts the philosophy and management approach of promoting community, government, and police partnerships. We offer a wide range of programs and services designed to improve the quality of life in our community.

Commitments

We are committed to providing the best services possible to the residents of Berkeley Heights. The Community Policing Unit continues to look for new and innovative ways to deliver police services and increase our accessibility.

Overview

The Support Services Commander Lt. Ed Gaffney oversees the CPU, consisting of the:

  • School Resource Officer (SRO)
  • Traffic Safety Officers

School Resource Officer

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is an integral part of the Community Policing Unit. The SRO program is a partnership with the Berkeley Heights Board of Education that places a Berkeley Heights police officer in our schools.

Goals

The goal of the SRO is to assist the schools and community in reducing juvenile delinquency through a collaborative approach focused on education, prevention, communication, and information sharing. In the classroom, the SRO is involved in a variety of functions and programs aimed at educating our youth to improve their safety and well-being. The SRO program reflects the police department and community’s shared goal of ensuring that schools are safe and secure.

Current Officer

The current School Resource Officer is Cpl. Don Maxwell  Dmaxwell@BHPOLICE.ORG
