September 5, 2023

New Jersey American Water (NJAW) tentatively plans to complete their months-long infrastructure project on Park Avenue by the end of this week. There is one final tie-in to be completed on Mountain Ave. and two cut & cap abandonments of the old water main to be completed on Mountain Ave. & Plainfield Ave. We will finish these tasks at night by the end of this week. NJAW will also be removing old fire hydrants, old valve boxes, topsoil & seed disturbed locations, and various project clean-up and punch list items. A restoration contractor will come in shortly after this to address any sidewalk slabs that need to be replaced, as well as curbing. After giving the construction trenches a few weeks to settle, NJAW will discuss with the Township a paving schedule for Park Avenue. The Township will publicize that schedule once we have it.

Thank you for your patience as NJAW has worked on these necessary infrastructure upgrades.

Meanwhile, work on the drainage and road reconstruction project on Kline Place and Fickler Place has begun, and the Township Council at their meeting on Sept. 5 will authorize the Township to go out to bid for a drainage and reconstruction project on Orion Road. We are still awaiting specific paving dates from PSE&G for the roads listed below.

August 28, 2023

The Township drainage and road reconstruction project on Kline Place and Fickler Place, partially funded by the NJ Department of Transportation, will now begin on or around Wednesday, August 30. The work is anticipated to last about 45 days. During that time, please be mindful of detours and of workers in the road. The contractor is coordinating with the Township and the Berkeley Heights Police Department as needed.

In addition, the following roads will now be paved by PSE&G in September; we will provide exact paving dates as we know them (please be advised that the Township is subject to contractors' schedules, which may change depending on weather, previous jobs or other factors).

Beginning Monday, July 31, a Township-approved tree contractor will begin removing trees in the Township right-of-way along Kline Place and Fickler Place, so that curbing and additional drainage can be installed next month. The vendor will only remove those trees that are absolutely necessary. Thank you.

July 17, 2023

Contractors for New Jersey American Water will be working on Kline Place and Fickler Place starting Thursday, July 18. NJAW is conducting tests to determine if they need to renew water services or upgrade any infrastructure under these roads, before the Township begins the drainage and road reconstruction work scheduled for this area next month. The Township is coordinating with utility companies to ensure any work they may need to do on roads scheduled to be paved within the next year or so, is done before the paving begins.

July 12, 2023

The Township drainage and road reconstruction project on Kline Place and Fickler Place, partially funded by the NJ Department of Transportation, will begin on or around Monday, August 21. The work is anticipated to last about 45 days. During that time, please be mindful of detours and of workers in the road. The contractor is coordinating with the Township and the Berkeley Heights Police Department as needed. More information will be issued as we get closer to the project start date.

June 27, 2023

Kline Boulevard is expected to be milled on Wed, June 28.  Paving will occur on Friday 6/30 or Monday 7/3 depending on weather.

June 22, 2023

Paving will begin on Locust Avenue on Friday, June 23. PLEASE NOTE: All residents and visitors should avoid Locust Avenue if possible; you will not be able to use it as a passthrough to and from Snyder Avenue and Timber Drive during paving. Detour signs will be posted as needed.

The Berkeley Heights Police Department will be on scene to help direct traffic needing to get in and out of the YMCA facility. If you need to access the Y for summer camp dropoff or pickup, one entrance to the YMCA should be available for you to use at any point during the paving. Please follow instructions for access from the BHPD officer on scene. Absolutely no heavy trucks will be allowed on the new road for at least a few hours after paving.

Paving will begin on Kline Blvd. on Monday, June 26.

Thank you for your patience.

June 20, 2023

This week's milling & paving schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, June 20: Finishing paving in Cinnamon Ridge
  • Wednesday, June 21: Milling will begin on Locust Avenue; paving will begin on Berkshire and Lorraine.
  • Thursday, June 22: Milling will begin on Kline Blvd; paving will begin on Lorraine, North and Branko
  • Friday, June 23: Paving will begin on Locust Avenue.
  • Monday, June 26: Paving will begin on Kline Blvd.

June 15, 2023

Paving in the Cinnamon Ridge are will begin Friday, June 15, weather permitting. TENTATIVELY: Paving crews will begin paving at the top (cul-de-sac) of Killarney Drive, and work their way down Killarney, paving cul-de-sacs Pinewood Crescent, Mary Court, Gregory Court etc on their way down toward Overhill Way. Just how much paving will be done Friday will also depend on weather. Milling work can continue in the rain. Reminder that so long as you can pass the crews safely and you are not violating any barricade, you can drive down milled out roads. The Berkeley Heights Police Department will be on-scene in the early afternoon to help direct traffic if needed around graduation time. We are working with the contractor to minimize any disruptions on Graduation Day.

June 14, 2023

Crews from New Jersey American Water will this week be working on Park Avenue during nighttime hours, as well as daytime. Daytime crews will break around 4 pm each day this week, then the night crews will begin work around 7 pm, working until 4 am.  The work being done during these hours will focus mainly at intersections; the goal is to alleviate heavier traffic issues during the daytime in these areas.  Please heed any and all detour signs during roadwork. Thank you.

June 13, 2023

Road milling and paving will begin Wednesday, June 14, in the area of Killarney Drive. The following roads will first be milled: Killarney Drive, Gregory Court, Pinewood Crest, Overhill Way, Highland Circle, Holly Mews, Heather Court, and Sunset Lane. After the milling is completed, the contractor will begin paving. Paving will begin this Friday, June 16. The Township is working with the contractor to minimize disruptions on Friday, amidst various graduation activities.

Please note: residents can drive on the roads when they are being milled but cannot drive on the newly paved roads for at least a few hours after paving. Barricades and signs will be installed in areas where vehicles are prohibited at any point during the paving. Anyone who ignores the barricades and signage and drives through an area may be ticketed for violating safety signage and warnings.

For those residents who live on cul-de-sacs: If you need to enter or exit your home in the few hours immediately after paving (new, hot asphalt being laid down), you will need to park your vehicle on an adjacent street to get in or out. You will not be able to drive on the hot asphalt. We strongly advise you to follow the Township Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/BerkeleyHeightsTwpNJ), Twitter account (https://twitter.com/BHnjGov), and/or sign up for website news alerts here (http://www.BerkeleyHeights.gov/SignUp) to get the regular paving updates so you can plan ahead and park your car accordingly. We will also post updated on the Township Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/berkeleyheightsgov/).

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we continue to upgrade our Township’s infrastructure.

June 9, 2023

Road milling and paving will begin next Wednesday, June 14, on Killarney Drive. The Township is meeting with the paving vendor early the week of June 11 to determine the order of road paving for the roads below. We will issue an update when that schedule has been completed.

May 24, 2023

The moment many have been waiting for (drum roll please...) ... the list of roads on our list to be paved in 2023.

In 2023, we have roads being paved with a variety of funding sources and from a number of contractors. Roads will be paved and drainage designed where necessary through: budget funds in the 2023 municipal budget, grants, or via the utility companies (PSE&G and NJ American Water, specifically). We will update with paving schedules once we receive start dates from the contractors/utility companies.

Please be patient - a lot of infrastructure improvements coming your way!
