[ARCHIVED] Kids, Adults Welcome to Join Sept. 16 'Workshop in the Woods'

Workshop in the Woods

Get the kids off the tablets and cell phones and get them into the forests! Join the Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission, Woods & Wayside International and Union County Connects on Saturday, September 16, as we explore ways to restore our trails and forests.

Two workshop sessions are available on September 16 - 10am and 2pm. Two Forestry Management Workshops, led by Dr. Patricia Shanley of Woods & Wayside International  (as well as some of her students) will cover topics such as:

  • Ecological "literacy"
  • Training youth to remove invasive species that choke and kill native trees and plants in our forests, and invite ticks and other harmful insects
  • Maintaining trails
  • How forests promote personal wellbeing

Each workshop includes hands-on work of restoring sections of our Passaic River trails, as well as a litter cleanup.

Tools will be provided. Liability waivers will need to be signed on site. If you can't make the workshop, you are still welcome to help with an organized clean up or even contribute at your own liking by cleaning any public space with your family!

UnionCountyConnects.org, a Union County Organization that works to build and promote a system, of trails throughout the county and promote healthy lifestyles through safe outdoor recreation and active (non-vehicular) transportation, will be present to promote their work building Rails-to-Trails throughout Union County.
