Mayor Angie Devanney Statement on the Relocation of Nokia/Bell Labs

Mayor Angie Devanney Statement on Statement on the Relocation of Nokia/Bell Labs

It was highly disappointing to discover through the media that Nokia/Bell Labs will be leaving the Murray Hill/Berkeley Heights to relocate to the Helix facility in New Brunswick, which will be built in the next 5 years.

However, I was encouraged to receive a phone call from Governor Phil Murphy offering his assistance, as well as that of Tim Sullivan, Executive Director of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, to attract the highest and best use to the Township of Berkeley Heights. I will work with state and local officials, and our neighbors in New Providence, to ensure we fight for what is best for us. I know our residents are fatigued with the additional residential projects that have resulted from the state-mandated affordable housing requirements.

Along with Mayor Al Morgan of New Providence, we pulled together our professionals on Monday, December 11 - which includes our redevelopment attorney, affordable housing attorney andAngie Devanney Feb 2020 affordable housing planner plus township planner - to discuss what the next iteration of the historic Bell Labs property. Our priority will be preserving open space and our history, exploring recreation opportunities, protecting environmentally sensitive areas, ensuring that we meet our affordable requirements, and attracting commercial businesses that will support our community. If we can head into the next round of affordable housing requirement in 2025 with a plan, it puts us less at risk for massive development. We will not sit idly by.

The news is only 48 hours old, and much unknown. I ask residents remain patient in this process as nothing will happen quickly. We will be deliberate, thoughtful and include our community in the decision making. But what I will share with the Township residents is that we will be open and honest about the process over the next 5 years. I look forward to updating the residents of Berkeley Heights.
